CANE workshop: background concepts and terms

It would be helpful if you could look over the following material before the beginning of the workshop. Don't be concerned about absorbing technical details at a first reading: we'll be introducing all of this at Dartmouth, but if you have seen some of these concepts before, we think you'll progress more quickly.
